London Machete Ambush Killers Jailed for Life as Judge Sets 189-Year Minimum

Lengthy minimum terms followed evidence of a planned ambush with offenders showing contempt in court.

Overview

  • At the Old Bailey, Lorik Lupqi was ordered to serve at least 39 years, Abel Chunda and Eden Clark 38 years, and Jason Furtado and Xavier Poponne 37 years, all for two murders and an attempted murder.
  • The coordinated attack targeted a music video gathering on the Elthorne Estate on 29 June 2023, where 15-year-old Leonardo Reid and 23-year-old Klevi Shekaj were killed and Abdullah Abdullahi was seriously injured after being mistaken for rivals.
  • Prosecutors relied on phone data showing about 50 short calls before the ambush, taxi movements linking the group, and drill-style lyrics found on Poponne’s phone that referenced details only the attackers would know.
  • The judge noted appalling courtroom behaviour, including defendants smirking and disrupting proceedings; Lupqi previously assaulted a co‑accused in the dock and, at sentencing, swore at the judge and issued a threat.
  • Investigators said Lupqi cut off an electronic tag and fled to Kosovo before being extradited in November 2024, and the court heard of extensive prior offending across the group, including 97 previous convictions for Chunda.
