Lombok Autopsy Confirms Asphyxia in Death of Spanish Traveler Matilde Muñoz

Police say prosecutors will soon receive the case file as two hotel-linked suspects remain in custody.

Overview

  • West Lombok Police disclosed on September 18 that a September 4 forensic exam determined Muñoz died by asphyxia with blunt-force trauma to the head, neck and chest.
  • Investigators have detained an employee and a former employee of the Bumi Aditya hotel who, according to police, confessed to killing her in her bungalow on July 2.
  • Police say the body was kept in the hotel’s generator room, moved to a rear area and then a vacant lot, and ultimately buried on a Senggigi beach on August 24.
  • Authorities report the theft of 3 million rupiah (about $182) and plan to seek charges of premeditated murder and robbery with violence resulting in death.
  • Family members say they learned the autopsy results through media reports and criticize Indonesian authorities for not informing them directly.
