Overview
- An order effective September 19 appointed advocates Rohan (Rohand) Singh and Sameeksha Dua to assist the committee examining grounds for removing Justice Yashwant Varma under the Judges (Inquiry) Act.
- Officials said the consultants will draft documents, coordinate with the Lok Sabha secretariat and provide legal-technical support to the panel.
- The inquiry panel comprises Supreme Court judge Arvind Kumar, Madras High Court chief justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava and jurist B. V. Acharya, following an impeachment notice endorsed by 146 MPs.
- The committee is expected to submit its report during Parliament’s winter session, after which the Lok Sabha could take up the notice if misconduct is established.
- The case stems from sacks of charred currency recovered at Varma’s Delhi residence in March; a Supreme Court in-house probe recommended removal, which he contests while denying wrongdoing.
