Overview

  • Speaker Om Birla accepted an impeachment motion backed by 146 MPs and invoked the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968 to set up the committee.
  • The panel—comprising Supreme Court Judge Arvind Kumar, Madras HC Chief Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava and jurist B. V. Acharya—can summon evidence, examine witnesses and must report its findings before the motion advances.
  • Parliament will hold the removal motion in abeyance until the committee submits its report, after which the Lok Sabha and then the Rajya Sabha will vote on the motion under constitutional provisions.
  • A Supreme Court bench on August 7 upheld the in-house inquiry that had found ‘sufficient substance’ in misconduct charges and dismissed Varma’s challenge to that process.
  • Justice Yashwant Varma continues to deny any connection to the burnt cash discovered at his Delhi residence following the March 14 fire.
