A Rs 20,000 crore Lodha Foundation endowment positions the new institute for sustained research programs beginning this month.

Overview

  • Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute opened with an inaugural symposium in Mumbai from August 17 to 19.
  • Number theorist V. Kumar Murty serves as founding director, with an advisory council that includes Fields Medalist Manjul Bhargava.
  • Bhargava will lead the first multi-month program on arithmetic statistics and number theory, slated to start later this month and run through mid-December.
  • The institute plans additional extended programs led by scholars such as Parimala Raman and Mahan Mj, alongside collaborations with TIFR, ISI, CMI and IISc.
  • LMSI says it will pair frontier mathematics with applications in data science, machine learning, operations research and optimisation to address infrastructure, healthcare and economic challenges, with a longer-term goal of hosting an Indian Congress of Mathematicians in December 2026.
