Lockheed Skunk Works Demos AI Battle Manager That Replans Missions in Seconds

Lockheed presents the operator-in-the-loop AI as a step toward more autonomous unmanned operations.

Overview

  • A live trial in Fort Worth integrated the mobile AI command-and-control node with a Stalker XE Block 25 UAV and a modified Alta X 2.0.
  • When a simulated fuel shortfall was detected, the AI generated alternative plans within seconds and presented options to the operator.
  • The operator selected a course of action that reassigned the Stalker’s tasks to the Alta X and directed the Stalker to return to base.
  • The same ground node simultaneously controlled an unmanned ground vehicle in Kansas and coordinated with additional UAVs supplied by Fulcrum.
  • Lockheed used its STAR.SDK to link the AI contingency app to a chat-based interface, a design meant to let operators address contingencies without losing focus on other mission duties.
