Overview

  • The 271-acre proposal by RWE Renewables UK Solar & Storage Ltd would create the UK’s largest solar farm, covering an area equivalent to around 71 football pitches near Powick in Worcestershire.
  • On June 8, campaigners from Preserve Powick Landscape and Nature led a community walk through the proposed site to highlight their opposition to the development.
  • Opponents including the Malvern Hills Trust and National Landscape warn the scheme would spoil views of the Malvern Hills, threaten wildlife habitats and pose fire risks from lithium-ion batteries.
  • Peter Loader, leader of PPLAN, cautioned that seven months of roadworks for cabling could disrupt traffic on the A449 and impact emergency services and school commutes.
  • Malvern Hills District Council is set to make a planning decision in autumn 2025 as RWE maintains the site’s proximity to the National Grid makes it the most suitable location for clean power generation.
