Overview

  • A person who stayed only in Lipsheim and Fegersheim south of Strasbourg contracted Chikungunya via an infected Asian tiger mosquito bite about six to seven kilometers from Germany.
  • This case adds to six other locally acquired Chikungunya infections identified recently near France’s Mediterranean coast.
  • Germany reported 75 travel-associated Chikungunya cases from April to June, mainly among returnees from Mauritius, La Réunion and Sri Lanka.
  • Two vaccines are available in Germany—Ixchiq, which is under European Medicines Agency safety review, and Vimkunya, approved in February 2025—though no specific antiviral therapy exists.
  • Asian tiger mosquitoes have become widespread across France near the German frontier and in several German states, creating favorable conditions for further local transmission.
