Overview

  • On July 7, the Robert Koch-Institut confirmed the first human Chikungunya infection acquired in the Elsass at Lipsheim/Fegersheim, approximately six to seven kilometers from the German border.
  • The Asian tiger mosquito has spread from the Mediterranean coast through Alsace to the Rhine and into German states including Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Bavaria.
  • Six local Chikungunya cases were reported near France’s Mediterranean coast in recent weeks, highlighting the virus’s northward advance.
  • Germany recorded 75 travel-associated Chikungunya cases from April through June, mostly in returnees from Mauritius, La Réunion and Sri Lanka, prompting approval of two vaccines—Ixchiq and Vimkunya—with Ixchiq under EMA safety review.
  • French and German health agencies have intensified mosquito control efforts, case detection and surveillance to curb cross-border transmission.
