Loblaw, Gatik Sign Multi-Year Deal to Deploy 50 Autonomous Trucks Across the Greater Toronto Area

Ontario’s new ACMV pilot enables the rollout, with Loblaw boosting its Gatik investment to scale regional distribution.

Overview

  • The companies signed a five-year agreement to expand Gatik’s fleet to 50 medium-duty autonomous trucks, with 20 in service by the end of 2025 and 30 more by the end of 2026.
  • Operations will start with safety drivers and transition to freight-only under Ontario’s Automated Commercial Motor Vehicle pilot, which permits Class 6–7 AV trucks on surface streets and highways and requires provincial remote assistants and vehicle labeling.
  • The network is slated to deliver to about 300 Loblaw stores across Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Toronto, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Pickering and Oshawa.
  • Gatik says the Class 6 trucks will run 12 hours per day, seven days a week, with cold-chain-ready configurations for time-sensitive grocery and household items.
  • Loblaw is increasing its equity stake in Gatik, the partners describe the plan as North America’s largest planned autonomous-truck rollout, and Gatik cites a third-party safety assessment and no autonomous-mode on-road incidents since 2019.
