Overview
- On June 16, 2025, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport upgraded the cathedral to Grade I listing following advice from Historic England.
- Designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and built between 1962 and 1967 atop Sir Edwin Lutyens’s crypt, the cathedral introduced a centralised plan to enhance congregational engagement.
- Its distinctive concrete lantern, filled with coloured glass by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens, exemplifies the fusion of modern architecture and fine art.
- Archbishop John Sherrington, Mayor Steve Rotheram and local officials praised the move for cementing the cathedral’s role as a symbol of Liverpool’s identity, faith and innovation.
- The upgraded status secures long-term conservation of the building’s celebrated artistic collaborations, including works by Elizabeth Frink and William Mitchell.
