Liverpool Man Jailed for Six Weeks for Killing Gull in Blackpool

The RSPCA says the case underscores legal protections for gulls under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Overview

  • CCTV captured Anthony Nurse kicking at gulls on Springfield Road, Blackpool, on December 17, 2024, and stamping on one bird three times, killing it.
  • The footage was sent to the RSPCA, which issued a public appeal that led to Nurse being identified.
  • Nurse, 31, of Hurstlyn Road in Allerton, Liverpool, initially denied involvement before pleading guilty on August 20 to an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
  • Preston Magistrates' Court sentenced him to six weeks in prison on November 19 after he was arrested for unrelated offences.
  • RSPCA inspector Daniel Tomlinson collected the bird’s remains and said the charity receives a report of deliberate or extreme cruelty to gulls about every three days.
