Gooch shot a 7-under 64 to lead the LIV Golf event outside Singapore by one stroke.
Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith, and Sergio Garcia were tied for second at 5-under when play was suspended.
Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau were another stroke back at 4-under.
Most golfers still had four holes left to play on the par-71 course when storms halted the first round.
Play will resume Saturday with revised tee times due to the weather.
