Liu Thai Ker, Singapore’s Master Planner, Dies at 87

Family members said he died after complications from a recent fall, prompting tributes from national leaders.

  • His son confirmed he died on Jan 18, with his firm MORROW Architects & Planners also announcing his passing, and relatives said he was surrounded by family.
  • As HDB’s design chief and later chief executive, he helped plan 20 of Singapore’s 24 new towns and oversaw about half of the nation’s more than one million public housing flats.
  • He became URA chief planner and CEO in 1989, leading a major update to Singapore’s Concept Plan before leaving public service in 1992.
