Lithuania Reopens Two Belarus Border Crossings as Traffic Resumes

Belarus reports its border and customs services are ready to handle travelers following a monthlong shutdown linked to reported meteorological-sonde incursions.

Overview

  • From 01:00 Minsk time on November 20, the Kamenny Log–Medininkai and Benyakoni–Šalčininkai road checkpoints returned to operation and the first vehicles crossed.
  • Belarus’s State Border Committee said it received formal notice from Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service on November 19 about the plan to restart the crossings.
  • Belarusian border and customs authorities stated they are prepared to process people and freight on the BelarusLithuania frontier.
  • Lithuania’s government announced the closures on October 29 for one month with a possible extension, citing a series of meteorological sondes entering its airspace.
  • Belarus previously moved more than 1,000 Lithuanian trucks to designated parking areas, and officials said the vehicles will stay there until cross-border truck movement is fully restored.
