The signing comes after Lions' backup tight end Brock Wright suffered a forearm injury, leaving Sam LaPorta as the only healthy tight end on the Lions' roster.
Ertz, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was released by the Arizona Cardinals in November and has been a free agent since then.
Ertz is expected to start on Detroit's practice squad but could be elevated to the active roster for the NFC Championship game.
Ertz's former teammate J.J. Watt broke the news that he parted ways with the Cardinals in November after requesting a release.
