Overview
- The Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation on Tuesday and formalized governance for the open protocol that Coinbase contributed, bringing together 40 member organizations and 17 premier members.
- x402 repurposes the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response so a server can return a price and a client can attach a signed stablecoin transfer, typically USDC, to complete low-value purchases without accounts or cards.
- Premier members include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Google, AWS, Cloudflare and Ripple, and Google and Cloudflare have already added x402 support to their agent toolkits.
- Published usage data show about 75 million x402 transactions moving roughly $24 million in the past 30 days, an average payment near $0.32 that demonstrates technical feasibility but represents a tiny slice of global payments.
- Industry participants warn further work is needed on protocol details, ledger settlement and security fixes — including stronger authorization and protections against replay attacks — before x402 can scale for broad commercial use.
