Lines Between Reading and Swindon Blocked After Person Struck by Train

Emergency services are on site while GWR and Network Rail have halted train movements to manage the incident.

Overview

  • Great Western Railway confirmed on Sunday that a person was struck by a train between Swindon and Reading, prompting an immediate stop to services in the corridor.
  • All lines between Reading and Swindon remain blocked and operators warned disruption could last for hours with GWR giving an initial window to about 4:30pm and National Rail advising delays or cancellations until around 6pm.
  • Major South West and CrossCountry routes have been hit with possible cancellations or delays to services serving Bristol Temple Meads, Bristol Parkway, Weston-super-Mare, Cheltenham Spa and long-distance CrossCountry links to Reading.
  • To reduce the risk of trains being stopped on open track, some long-distance services are being held at distant platforms and many timetables are being revised or curtailed while passengers are offered support including the Samaritans on 116 123.
  • Emergency responders are handling the scene and an investigation is under way, with knock-on cancellations and extended journey times likely so passengers should check operator updates before travel.
