Lineker Urges VAR Rethink After Caicedo’s Red Card

Overview

• Lineker calls for curbing slow‑motion and freeze‑frame use in VAR checks, arguing they exaggerate tackles like Moises Caicedo’s.
• Referee Anthony Taylor upgraded Caicedo’s yellow to red after VAR John Brooks sent him to the pitchside monitor for a challenge on Mikel Merino.
• Officials were likely applying guidance on excessive force and point of contact, with reports noting Merino’s ankle buckled in the tackle.
• The match ended 1-1, with Trevoh Chalobah scoring for Chelsea before Merino equalised for Arsenal.
• Caicedo received a three‑match ban that will sideline him against Leeds, Bournemouth and Everton, as Enzo Maresca accepted the red but questioned consistency by citing Rodrigo Bentancur’s earlier challenge.
