Lindsay Sandiford To Fly Home From Bali Under UK–Indonesia Repatriation Deal

Indonesian officials approved her transfer on humanitarian grounds, citing age, illness and good behaviour in prison.

Overview

  • The 69-year-old is due to leave Kerobokan prison today, be handed to UK officials in Denpasar, and board a flight to London.
  • A second British national, 35-year-old Shahab Shahabadi, is also being transferred under the same arrangement.
  • Indonesia’s legal affairs minister, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, said Sandiford is "old and sick" and behaved well in custody.
  • Mahendra said he signed a repatriation agreement with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper allowing Sandiford to complete her sentence in the UK.
  • Sandiford was sentenced to death in 2013 after nearly five kilos of cocaine were found in her luggage; she has spent about 13 years in Kerobokan prison.
