Limo Bus Overturns on I-75 in Monroe County as Police Cite Driver for Licensing Violations

State police say the driver lacked required credentials to operate the vehicle.

Overview

  • The rollover was reported around 6:15 p.m. Thursday on southbound I-75 near the I-275 exit in Monroe County, closing the southbound lanes and diverting traffic at Exit 20.
  • Michigan State Police say the 2008 Ford Super Duty limo-bus left the roadway for unknown reasons, rolled multiple times, and ejected several occupants, with drugs and alcohol not suspected.
  • The bus was carrying 15 people, mostly teens from Detroit’s Community Violence Intervention Program, en route to Cedar Point, according to local reporting.
  • Eleven occupants were transported to hospitals, with eight sustaining minor injuries, two in serious condition, and one in critical condition as of Thursday night, according to police.
  • MSP’s commercial vehicle unit found the 69-year-old Detroit driver lacked the proper license group and a valid DOT medical certificate, the operator lacked authority to transport passengers, and the driver was ticketed.
