Lima Unveils 2045 Mobility Plan as 500 Smart Buses Enter Service

The transport authority says the blueprint will cut long commutes by integrating metro, cable cars, BRT, bus corridors.

Overview

  • ATU presented a near-final Urban Mobility Plan to 2045 proposing seven new metro lines, eight urban cable cars, 155 km of BRT and 214 km of short‑term preferential bus corridors.
  • More than 500 new buses are now operating across Lima Norte, Centro, Este and Sur with onboard cameras, GPS and digital fare payment.
  • The authority has issued enabling titles for 452 routes to help operators access financing for fleet renewal and route reorganization.
  • Route renewals start at five years, extendable to 13 years for fleets using natural gas and up to 19 years for hybrid or electric units to accelerate cleaner operations.
  • Security upgrades are being accelerated with additional video‑surveillance procurement, and early projects include a proposed 6 km cable car linking San Martín de Porres and San Juan de Lurigancho.
