Lima Removes Over 850 Tons of New Year Waste in Overnight Cleanup

Officials urged residents to stop burning trash, warning of fines exceeding S/440.

Overview

  • Municipal cleanup teams collected more than 850 tonnes of solid waste in the Cercado de Lima during the early hours of Jan. 1.
  • Over 300 workers, two wash cisterns, five compactors and two front loaders sustained operations across six zones.
  • Crews extinguished about 62 waste-burning points as part of street sweeping, washing and collection efforts.
  • The heaviest loads were in Barrios Altos and Mirones Bajo (about 200 tonnes each), with more in the Centro Histórico (150+ tonnes) and around 100 tonnes in Santa Beatriz, Chacra Ríos and Cipreses.
  • The municipality said the effort restored order after celebrations and contrasted the surge with an estimated 650 tonnes generated around Christmas in the Gamarra area.
