Lima Removes More Than 850 Tons of New Year Waste in Overnight Cercado Cleanup

Officials deployed over 300 workers with tankers, compactors, loaders, issuing warnings of fines for illegal burning.

  • The Metropolitan Municipality of Lima said the early‑Jan. 1 operation cleared accumulated refuse across the Cercado de Lima after celebrations.
  • Crews extinguished 62 burn points, including effigies and household trash, with sites identified in Manzanilla, Ayllón, Aviación, Grau and Monserrat.
  • Barrios Altos and Mirones Bajo each accounted for roughly 200 tons, the Historic Center exceeded 150 tons, and Santa Beatriz, Chacra Ríos and Cipreses were near 100 tons apiece.
  • The intervention, coordinated by the City Services and Environmental Management office, combined sweeping, sidewalk washing and sustained collection routes across six zones.
  • Authorities reiterated that burning waste is prohibited and subject to fines above S/440, urging residents to avoid dumping and participate in municipal recycling efforts.
