Lima Records Unusually Early 30°C Reading in Carabayllo

Officials say a developing El Niño is clearing coastal clouds and pushing coastal temperatures above normal through early 2027.

Overview

  • The Carabayllo meteorological station reached 30°C at midday after Sunday's reading, a level not previously recorded so early in Lima's annual cycle.
  • Other monitoring sites in the capital also showed high daytime values with La Molina at 29°C, Jesús María at 28°C and Callao at 27°C on the same day.
  • Senamhi has issued an advisory for increased daytime heat from October 20 to 22 with projected maximums up to 36°C on the north coast and INDECI has urged sun protection, hydration and care for vulnerable groups.
  • The national government is supervising contingency works in vulnerable coastal areas, including desilting and channel adjustments in Piura, as part of a plan that lists dikes, dynamic barriers and new canals to reduce flood risk.
  • The multiagency Enfen forecast links the spike to a developing coastal El Niño and warns of sustained above-average coastal warmth into early 2027 with a higher chance of coastal rainfall and contrasting dry conditions inland.
