Lima Opens 30‑Day Bidirectional Bus Lane on Avenida Arequipa

The trial reserves one lane exclusively for Corredor Azul buses to speed trips, informing a decision on phased extension.

Overview

  • The Autoridad de Transporte Urbano (ATU) launched the 30-day pilot on Saturday, Aug. 22, converting a 1.5 km stretch from Paseo Colón (Av. 9 de Diciembre) to Jirón Emilio Fernández into a bidirectional lane reserved for authorized Corredor Azul buses.
  • ATU relocated the Saco Oliveros and Natalio Sánchez Dagnino stops to the central median, published detour routes for private vehicles and activated a Vehículo Autorizado con Permiso de Paso (VAPP) system so residents and businesses can request limited access.
  • Police and ATU inspectors moved quickly to enforce the new restrictions on the first day, intervening against informal transport operators and confronting demonstrators near the Circuito Mágico del Agua in clashes that involved stones and sticks and disrupted traffic.
  • Simultaneously ATU opened a digital Platforma Digital de Subsidio to administer two temporary supports: a per‑kilometer payment (S/0.50 for ómnibus, S/0.40 for minibuses, S/0.30 for microbuses) and a META‑Nacional diesel rebate of S/4 per gallon for documented B5/B20 purchases between Aug. 16 and Nov. 15, 2026.
  • ATU will monitor performance through the monthlong test and says the measure could reach the Óvalo de Miraflores if successful; the authority projects faster service for about 70,000 daily riders with peak trips cut from roughly 10 to 6 minutes which will shift traffic patterns onto alternate avenues and affect local access needs.
