Lima Metro Line 1 Nears Capacity Study Finish, Fare Increase Still Possible

Funding terms will be negotiated next year with the two national ministries.

Overview

  • The viability study being prepared with ProInversión and ATU is set to define the number of trains, electrical reinforcements, station upgrades and new depots required.
  • Talks with the Economy and Finance Ministry and the Transport and Communications Ministry are planned for 2026 to set the execution timeline and financing, and no fare change has been announced.
  • Current daily ridership exceeds 600,000 passengers, with a target near one million as new interconnections, including at Estación Grau, come online.
  • Implementation of the expansion, including procuring trains and strengthening power systems, is expected to take about four years once agreements are in place.
  • The concessionaire has proposed adding 31 six-car trains to lift capacity toward 80,000 passengers per hour and expects to sign a new agreement before July 2026.
