Lima Education Authority Lets Schools Temporarily Move to Virtual Classes

The rule allows local school leaders to shift to virtual lessons after safety checks, protecting students and preserving learning.

Overview

  • Heavy rains and aniegos in parts of Lima's Cono Sur have damaged some school facilities and disrupted travel, with reports of water entering classrooms at Colegio Juan Pablo II.
  • The Dirección Regional de Educación de Lima Metropolitana issued Comunicado N.° 07-2026 authorizing public schools to adopt temporary non‑presential (virtual) classes when safety does not guarantee the integrity of students, teachers or staff.
  • School directors must evaluate infrastructure, basic services and access routes and immediately report any risks or damage to their corresponding Unidad de Gestión Educativa Local (UGEL) along with measures taken to protect the school community.
  • DRELM ordered the seven UGELs of Lima Metropolitana to intensify monitoring of schools, coordinate with directors on safety assessments, and report monitoring results and actions back to the regional office so additional support can be arranged.
  • Authorities stressed the change is case‑by‑case not a general suspension of classes and urged families and media to rely on official education channels to avoid unverified rumors.
