Lima Districts Warn of New Year Bans on Effigy Burning and Fireworks, With Fines Up to S/5,350

Municipal notices ahead of New Year’s Eve outline district-level fines under local ordinances.

Overview

  • Surco and Jesús María set fines of S/5,350 for the unauthorized sale or use of pyrotechnics under their municipal rules.
  • Pueblo Libre penalizes illegal manufacture, storage, transport or commercialization of fireworks with fines from 100% to 400% of a UIT.
  • Miraflores’ Ordinance No. 480 lists seven pyrotechnics-related infractions, including ambulant sales, sales to minors and use in unauthorized spaces or hours, with penalties up to 3 UIT.
  • Districts also prohibit burning year-end effigies due to fire hazards and other safety risks, with maximum sanctions reported up to 4 UIT (about S/5,000).
  • Restrictions are not citywide, so violations during New Year’s Eve and the early hours of Jan. 1 will be sanctioned according to each municipality’s enforcement scheme.
