Lima Districts Roll Out New Year Bans and Fines as La Plata Tradition Faces Limits

Authorities cite fire risk, public safety and noise concerns as they mobilize enforcement for Dec. 31–Jan. 1.

Overview

  • Chorrillos confirmed a prohibition on beach camping and bonfires at Agua Dulce and other shorelines for New Year’s, with fines up to S/2,800 and overnight patrols to enforce compliance.
  • Multiple Lima districts warned that burning muñecos and using or selling pyrotechnics can draw penalties up to 4 UIT (about S/5,000), with Surco and Jesús María setting fines at S/5,350.
  • Pueblo Libre outlined sanctions from 100% to 400% of a UIT for illegal manufacture, storage, transport or sale of fireworks, while Miraflores’ Ordinance No. 480 sets up to 3 UIT for the most serious infractions.
  • Muñequeros in La Plata protested municipal rules that bar burnings in the Casco Urbano and allow only 22 figures in designated areas outside the center, arguing the restrictions were announced with little notice.
  • Regional crackdowns continue, with Salta reporting more than 25 seizures in intensified operations and Michoacán’s governor urging stronger market oversight, as local police, inspectors and fire services prepare joint New Year deployments.
