Lima Combi Shooting Leaves Driver Critical as Extortion Violence Targets Peru’s Transport

Police and prosecutors are investigating extortion networks tied to coordinated attacks on public transport.

Overview

  • Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a packed combi on Avenida Óscar R. Benavides in Cercado de Lima, critically wounding driver Ronald Mamani Cayo and injuring passenger Daniela Tinoco Chávez, with investigators collecting bullet casings and an extortion note demanding S/40 per vehicle.
  • Reports link the threats to alias “Tito,” identified as Miguel Ángel Marín Mazzetti and held in the Aucallama prison, who claimed responsibility online after a prior explosive threat against the same company on the Lima–Callao route.
  • Depincri units and the Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office are leading the probes, and police in Villa María del Triunfo arrested a 27-year-old suspect tied to an extortion network, seizing a Beretta-style pistol, suspected drugs and gang paraphernalia, along with a video under review.
  • Transport operators suspended services and gathered vehicles on the Colonial corridor to protest extortion and demand greater protection following the attack.
  • The weekend also saw lethal assaults tied to transport in other regions, including the killing of mototaxista César Augusto Gonzales in Villa El Salvador after reportedly refusing daily payments, the shooting death of taxi driver Juan Carlos Jiménez Camizán in Piura and the armed robbery of at least a dozen vehicles on the Juliaca–Rinconada road that left one passenger wounded.
