Lima Bus Operators Block Highways and March on Congress as 48-Hour Strike Nears

Drivers insist concrete security measures plus legal reforms are needed to curb extortion.

Overview

  • Five companies—Santa Catalina, Huáscar, Las Flores, Línea 41 and Los Chinos—kept more than 100 buses out of service for a third day, with blockades on the Panamericana Norte and Sur that left thousands of passengers stranded.
  • Over 10 Línea 41 units formed a caravan from Trapiche in Los Olivos toward Congress under police escort to press for protection after shootings and threats linked to extortion.
  • The Asociación Nacional de Conductores del Perú called a nationwide 48-hour stoppage for September 27–28, and authorities have not designated those dates as holidays or special nonworking days.
  • Transport leaders demand permanent police presence on critical routes, faster prosecutorial action, legal changes, advanced camera systems and a formal working group with Interior and Transport officials.
  • Despite the reported capture of alleged mafia leader “El Monstruo,” union representatives voice distrust of lasting results and are advancing a life-insurance bill for victims’ families in Congress.
