Lima and Transport Ministry Sign Framework Deal to Launch LimaChosica Train

The pact empowers a coordinated rollout under the transport ministry using Caltrain equipment.

Overview

  • The Municipality of Lima and the Transport and Communications Ministry signed the institutional framework on December 29 with ATU and ProInversión joining to coordinate implementation.
  • Lima will cede the use of 19 locomotives and 90 passenger cars sourced from Caltrain to the ministry after the units arrived at the Port of Callao between July and August 2025.
  • A pilot is planned for peak hours with morning trips from Chosica to central Lima and afternoon return runs, targeting an initial capacity of up to 12,800 passengers per day.
  • The transport ministry is evaluating options from a seven‑train basic service to a 17‑train plan with added double track and new stops that could raise capacity to about 92,500 passengers daily.
  • Audits and reporting have questioned the trains’ condition, emissions and whether they were fully donated, and officials indicate technical reviews and a phased start are expected in early 2026 subject to approvals.
