Lima and Callao Face 24-Hour Transport Strike on Jan. 14 Over Extortion Crisis

Union leaders cite unchecked extortion that has left drivers unprotected.

Overview

  • The stoppage is set to begin at 00:00 Wednesday for 24 hours, with more than 22,000 buses, cústers and combis from roughly 320 companies halting service.
  • Organizers describe a peaceful, non-political protest using “hombre‑máquina” actions and motor shutoffs on corridors such as the Panamericana and access points to San Juan de Lurigancho.
  • After talks with President José Jerí and outreach from the Interior Ministry, union spokesmen Martín Ojeda and Héctor Vargas said no concrete measures emerged to avert the strike, citing drivers killed roughly every eight hours and daily extortion payments of S/10–S/30.
  • Transport leaders demand operational regulation of Law 32490 to establish an elite anti-crime capacity, state support for families of slain drivers, and enforcement of the ban on two riders per motorcycle.
  • Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo offered city monitoring of onboard bus cameras and funding for more devices, as universities including PUCP, UNI, Universidad del Pacífico, UPC and ICPNA moved classes online for the day.
