Lima and Callao Bus Lines Plan 24-Hour Shutdown Monday After Driver Killing

The interior minister says early leads point away from extortion.

Overview

  • Driver Daniel José Cedeña Alfonso was shot while operating a Lipetsa bus on Avenida Miguel Iglesias in San Juan de Miraflores and was pronounced dead at Hospital María Auxiliadora.
  • CIT director Martín Ojeda confirmed a 24-hour, peaceful “engine shutoff” on Monday in Lima and Callao, saying buses will remain in their depots with no marches or blockades and inviting symbolic public support.
  • Major formal operators from the north, south and east of Lima and Callao are set to participate, with lines such as VíaZeta, Los Loritos, Vipusa, Vipetsa, Nueva América, Urbanito, Edilberto Ramos, Huáscar, Santa Catalina and Los Chinos listed by organizers.
  • Interior Minister Carlos Malaver criticized the swift strike call and said preliminary information suggests a possible personal motive, noting no extortion threats were reported by the company as police continue the investigation.
  • Transport leaders warned they will repeat 24-hour stoppages if more drivers are killed, and education authorities are evaluating adjustments for classes as officials hold multi-agency security talks.
