Lima Airport Reports Three False Bomb Threats in 48 Hours as Latest Flight Resumes Safely

LAP says the hoax alerts constitute crimes that trigger immediate security protocols.

Overview

  • Lima Airport Partners said a presumed bomb threat was received at 7:41 a.m. on Sept. 15 for LATAM flight 2209 from Lima to Juliaca, prompting activation of standard procedures.
  • The police explosives unit UDEX evacuated passengers and used specialized dogs to inspect baggage and the aircraft as part of the protocol.
  • After technical checks by LAP, LATAM and UDEX, the threat was discarded, passengers reboarded, and the flight continued, with LATAM having earlier reprogrammed the departure to 12:00 p.m.
  • Police detained a Peruvian passenger who had arrived from Cancún and was reported to have loudly claimed possession of an explosive during a dispute over a missing phone, with authorities handling the case under procedure.
  • LAP later reported three false bomb alerts within 48 hours at Jorge Chávez and emphasized that such hoaxes disrupt operations, mobilize resources and are prosecutable offenses under the Penal Code.
