The show received negative reviews that criticized its "tawdry cliches"and "rape fantasies".
Some crew members were uncomfortable with the direction of the show after the original director left the production.
Despite the controversy, Depp described filming The Idol as "quite lighthearted".
The five-episode first season of The Idol debuts June 4 on HBO Max.
