Lilium Receives EU Approval to Develop Electric Air Taxi
The German company's 'Design Organization Approval' allows it to proceed with the design and manufacture of its all-electric vertical take-off and landing jet, aiming for commercial flights by 2025.
- German air taxi company Lilium has received regulatory approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to design and manufacture its all-electric vertical take-off and landing jet.
- The approval, known as 'Design Organization Approval', allows Lilium to proceed with the next steps in the design and manufacture of the vehicle, effectively acting as its own regulatory supervisor.
- The Lilium Jet uses multiple small propellers driven by electric motors to provide lift during take-off and landing, as well as thrust during the cruise phase.
- Once ready for commercial flights, the Lilium Jet will be able to travel 300 kilometers in an hour after a single charge.
- Lilium, founded in 2015, plans to launch commercial flights by 2025, facing competition from major aerospace players Boeing and Airbus, as well as German start-up Volocopter.
