Overview

  • Two lightning-sparked wildfires at Black Canyon’s South Rim and near Jacob Lake have scorched about 1,640 acres and 1,000 acres respectively with zero containment.
  • Mandatory evacuations remain in effect for park staff, visitors and nearby residents and both national parks are closed until further notice.
  • Approximately 500 guests were safely evacuated from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim after the White Sage Fire threatened nearby campgrounds and facilities.
  • Federal and state agencies are leading coordinated air drops and ground suppression efforts through the U.S. National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.
  • Red flag warnings for extreme heat, low humidity and gusty winds are heightening fire risks and hampering containment operations.
