Lightning Strike on Rio Tocantins Fishing Trip Kills Two as Survivor Recounts Ordeal

Authorities say the victims were thrown overboard by a storm-time lightning strike.

Overview

  • Rescuers recovered the bodies of Murilo Guimarães Vinhal, 33, and Idael da Silva Farias, 38, at about 11:50 a.m. on Sunday roughly 3 km downstream from Filadélfia at a depth of around 8 meters.
  • Survivor Ricardo Moacir Machado Vieira, 40, a professor, suffered burns and told friends he jumped in to pull Murilo back but began to sink and had to release him before reaching shore to call for help.
  • Search and recovery spanned two days with divers, firefighters from Araguaína and Imperatriz (MA), Navy teams, and four CIBS members from Palmas, as well as friends using jet skis, working in low-visibility water 8–10 meters deep.
  • The bodies were examined at the Araguaína IML and released to families; Murilo was buried in Araguaína on Monday and Idael’s body was taken to Fortaleza dos Nogueiras (MA) after relatives held prayers on the riverbank.
  • Inmet had forecast dense cloud cover and issued an intense-rain alert for the region at the time, with guidance to avoid exposed areas and conductive objects during storms.
