Lightning-Sparked TCU Complex Nears 12,000 Acres as 6-5 Fire Strikes Chinese Camp

California secured a FEMA assistance grant to fund a surge of crews, aircraft, dozers as the fires remained largely uncontained.

Overview

  • CAL FIRE grouped more than a dozen lightning ignitions into the TCU September Lightning Complex, burning about 12,000 acres across Tuolumne and Calaveras counties by Wednesday morning.
  • The 6-5 Fire reached roughly 6,400 acres with 0% containment after pushing into Chinese Camp, where multiple structures burned, with local reports citing at least five homes lost.
  • Mandatory evacuation orders covered Chinese Camp and surrounding zones, with shelters open at the Sonora Senior Center in Sonora and Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp.
  • Incident Command requested extensive resources including engines, dozers, crews and aircraft, and the state obtained a FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant to support suppression.
  • No injuries or fatalities were confirmed, smoke degraded regional air quality, and closures included the Highway 120/108 Yosemite junction with no reopening time announced.
