Lightning-Sparked 2-2 Fire Near Highway 4 Tops 1,300 Acres, No Containment

Officials cite morning lightning as the trigger for a coordinated multi-agency response.

  • Cal Fire’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit reported the 2-2 Fire west of Copperopolis exceeded 1,300 acres Tuesday afternoon with zero containment.
  • Calaveras County ordered evacuations for zones CCU-155 and CCU-152-A near the county line, then lifted those orders by 3 p.m.
  • Highway 4 closed between Escalon Bellota Road and Telegraph Road earlier in the day and reopened around 1:30 p.m., authorities said.
  • A separate 2-7 Fire near Vallecito reached about 451 acres with evacuation orders in several zones and a shelter open at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp.
  • Other lightning-related incidents included the 2-3 Fire at 30 acres near O'Byrnes Ferry Road, Sacramento County’s Brown and Rock fires at about 25 acres each with an Ione Road closure, and PG&E outages affecting at least 828 Copperopolis customers.
