Overview

  • The White Sage Fire has consumed more than 40,000 acres near Jacob Lake since igniting on July 9, while the Dragon Bravo Fire has burned over 5,000 acres within Grand Canyon National Park since July 4.
  • The Dragon Bravo Fire breached containment lines and razed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge, visitor center, gas station, wastewater treatment plant, administrative buildings and employee housing on the North Rim.
  • Damage to the park’s wastewater treatment facility released chlorine gas, forcing closures of the North Kaibab Trail, South Kaibab Trail and Phantom Ranch and evacuations of hikers and firefighting crews in the inner canyon.
  • All staff, residents and visitors were evacuated from the North Rim, which will remain closed for the rest of the season under continuing red-flag warnings.
  • Governor Katie Hobbs has demanded an independent investigation into the initial confine-and-contain firefighting strategy that preceded the lodge’s destruction.
