Lifeguard Removes Alligator Snapping Turtle From Kirkland’s Juanita Beach Park

Officials urged beachgoers to keep their distance from non-native snapping turtles due to their powerful bite.

Overview

  • The large turtle was spotted under a dock last week at Juanita Beach Park in Kirkland and was captured by lifeguard supervisor Dani.
  • Kirkland Parks and Community Services shared photos and credited Dani, Animal Control Officer Angela Arnold and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for the response.
  • The city warned that snapping turtles can be aggressive and advised people to stay back and notify lifeguards or park staff if one is seen.
  • Reports described the species as invasive in Washington, with background from wildlife authorities noting it is native to parts of the southeastern United States and can reach very large sizes.
  • Authorities have not disclosed where the turtle was taken or its status after removal.
