Lifeboat and Container From MV Wan Hai503 Wash Ashore in Kerala as Vessel Is Towed Offshore

Overview

  • A lifeboat and an empty container from the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai503 washed ashore at Paravur in Alappuzha district on the night of June 15 and were secured by local authorities.
  • The cargo ship caught fire on June 9 after a container explosion off the Kannur coast and is now being towed about 45 nautical miles offshore.
  • Salvage crews appointed by the ship’s owner have begun removing drifted debris and customs officials have been notified to process the recovered items.
  • Indian Navy and Coast Guard vessels continue to monitor the towing operation while minor fires persist in two or three areas of the ship.
  • The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has urged residents to maintain a distance of at least 200 metres from any suspicious debris due to reports of hazardous cargo.
