Overview
- Engineers have assembled the steel artwork On Freedom’s Wings beside the A46, with cladding and identity lettering now being fitted.
- Built by Timmins Engineering and Construction and transported under police escort, the aircraft was lifted into place and secured by volunteers over the weekend.
- The structure spans more than 31 metres and weighs over 100 tonnes, with design details echoing a nearby 1942 Lancaster crash.
- Organisers say the site remains a construction area and will open to visitors in the autumn, with a new car park and entry off Folly Lane and no access via the A46 works road.
- The Bomber County Gateway Trust’s eight-year, largely donation-funded project has cost up to £1 million, and around £20,000 is still sought for completion and maintenance.
