Overview
- Lidl plans to convert quark, fresh whipped cream, sour cream, cottage cheese and skyr to at least welfare level 3 by the end of 2025.
- The discounter will pay a dedicated welfare premium to German farmers to support the shift to higher animal welfare standards.
- Eligible dairy items will carry Lidl’s own ‘Faire Haltung’ label to help shoppers identify improved welfare tiers.
- By year’s end, Lidl also aims to upgrade half of its chilled fresh meat and ‘Metzgerfrisch’ sausage range to level 3, with full fresh meat compliance targeted by 2030.
- Greenpeace welcomed the initiative as progress but noted that butter and cheese were unexpectedly left out of the initial upgrade plan.
