Lidl-Led Dairy Price War Deepens as Aldi and Others Slash Cheese After Butter Cuts

Lower milk costs are enabling a fresh wave of reductions that now reaches cheese.

Overview

  • Lidl’s Milbona Deutsche Markenbutter has been priced at €1.49 for a 250‑gram pack since September 26 after a 16% cut, marking its fourth reduction.
  • Aldi Nord and Süd, Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland, Penny and Netto quickly matched or followed with their own butter price cuts.
  • Cheese prices are now falling too, with Aldi reducing more than 30 items and Norma over 20, and several varieties down as much as 16%.
  • Examples include Butterkäse and Edamer dropping to €2.49 from €2.99, while Lidl claims the cheapest 600‑gram Gouda and is cutting Maasdamer, Mascarpone and Bioland sliced cheese.
  • Retailers cite abundant milk supply and lower input costs, alongside rising demand—Lidl reports per‑capita cheese consumption at 25.4 kg in 2024—though producers and milk farmers face mounting pressure from lower payouts.
