Libya’s Top General Mohammed al-Haddad Killed in Ankara Jet Crash as Turkey Opens Probe

Officials attribute the emergency to a reported electrical fault, initially ruling out sabotage.

Overview

  • The Dassault Falcon 50 departed Ankara’s Esenboğa Airport around 20:10 local time and sent an emergency landing signal near Haymana about 40–42 minutes later before crashing.
  • Wreckage was found near Kesikkavak village in Ankara Province, and authorities confirmed eight fatalities, including three crew members and four senior Libyan officers traveling with al-Haddad.
  • Those killed alongside al-Haddad were identified as Gen Al-Fitouri Gharibil, Brig Gen Mahmoud al-Qatawi, adviser Mohammed al-Asawi Diab, and military photographer Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub.
  • Turkish prosecutors launched a formal investigation and said early findings indicate a technical failure; Libyan authorities declared mourning and are joining the inquiry.
  • Ankara temporarily closed its airspace and diverted flights after the crash, which followed al-Haddad’s meetings with Turkey’s defense leadership earlier in the day.
