Libya’s Military Chief Killed in Ankara Jet Crash as Turkey Launches Probe

The Falcon 50 crashed shortly after takeoff following a distress call about an electrical fault.

Overview

  • Turkish authorities located the wreckage near Kesikkavak village in Ankara’s Haymana district after radio contact was lost about 40 minutes into the flight.
  • All eight aboard were confirmed dead, including Lt. Gen. Mohammed al-Haddad, Al-Fitouri Gharibil, Mahmoud Al-Qatawi, Muhammad Al-Asawi Diab, Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, and three crew members.
  • The delegation had held high-level defense talks in Ankara earlier in the day with Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Turkish Chief of General Staff Selcuk Bayraktaroglu.
  • Ankara’s airspace was briefly closed and flights were diverted; security footage captured a bright flash in the sky near the crash area.
  • Prosecutor-led investigations are underway, with early official statements pointing to technical failure and saying sabotage has been ruled out so far, as Libya declares mourning and sends a team to coordinate in Ankara.
